Опис
Alabama azalea is a rare native deciduous azalea endemic to the limestone cedar glades and sandy, acidic woodlands of central Alabama and adjacent states — one of the most sweetly fragrant of all native azaleas, its white to creamy-white flowers with yellow-orange blotches emit a delicate, spicy-sweet fragrance reminiscent of lemony honey that fills the woodland in spring. It blooms in April after the piedmont azalea but before leaves emerge, producing large, showy clusters of flowers at a time when the garden's background is still relatively bare. Alabama azalea is adapted to the warm, humid climate of the upper Gulf Coastal Plain, tolerating zone 9 summers better than most native azaleas of eastern North America — an important advantage for Gulf Coast native gardens where heat and humidity defeat many Rhododendron species. In acidic woodland gardens and under tall pines, plant in combination with native groundcovers like Carex, Pachysandra procumbens, and native ferns for an authentic Alabama woodland garden.

Plant container-grown shrubs in fall in moist, acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), well-drained, humus-rich, sandy or loamy soil in partial shade; Alabama azalea is a shallow-rooted woodland plant that requires well-drained, acidic soil and cannot tolerate alkaline, compacted, or waterlogged conditions.
