Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus)

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun; agapanthus produces strappy, strap-like evergreen foliage and tall, sturdy flower stems topped by globose umbels of blue, purple, or white trumpet-shaped flowers in June–July that are extraordinarily striking in mass plantings. It is one of the signature plants of Gulf Coast landscapes, thriving in heat, humidity, and coastal conditions with very little care. Clumps become slightly root-bound over time and actually flower more prolifically when congested — do not divide unless absolutely necessary. Deciduous types (A. praecox) are more cold-hardy to zone 7 with protection. Deadhead spent stems for neatness and to prevent abundant self-seeding of named cultivars.
