Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; African iris is one of the most practical and reliable perennials for zone 8–11 landscapes, earning its common name 'fortnight lily' because it blooms in cycles roughly every two weeks throughout the warm season. The elegant white flowers with yellow and purple markings closely resemble true iris flowers but are produced on branching stalks that continue reblooming without deadheading — the spent blooms drop cleanly without the need for any grooming. The clumping, strap-like, evergreen leaves provide bold, attractive foliage year-round. It is exceptionally drought, heat, salt, and poor-soil tolerant once established, performing equally well in coastal and inland gardens. Divide congested clumps every 4–5 years in spring. A closely related species, Dietes bicolor (yellow African iris), produces pale yellow flowers with purple spots and is similarly adaptable. An outstanding low-maintenance perennial for mass plantings, borders, and water-wise landscapes.

Plant divisions in spring or fall in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun to partial shade; African iris blooms most profusely in full sun but tolerates partial shade well. Avoid deadheading spent flower stalks — the branching stems continue to produce new flower buds from the same stalk for months.
